Software-based “Virtual Joey” client connects to DISH Hopper, making live TV and recordings accessible on PlayStation® platforms.

DISH Network L.L.C., a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH), today announced that it will be launching an application that gives customers control of the Hopper® Whole-Home HD DVR on Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation®3 (PS3™) and PlayStation®4 (PS4™) systems starting Spring 2014. DISH’s Virtual Joey provides a nearly identical experience to the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR’s hardware-based Joey®, making live TV and recordings accessible on PlayStation platforms.

With millions of PS3 and PS4 systems in U.S. homes, PlayStation owners with a DISH subscription will be able to stay connected with their Hopper system via a software-based Virtual Joey client. Using a customer’s home network, the Virtual Joey can connect wirelessly to the Hopper allowing for installation options where coaxial or Ethernet wiring may be difficult to access.

“DISH’s ‘Virtual Joey’ brings the industry’s most awarded DVR experience to millions of PS3 and PS4 systems already in American homes,” said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and CEO. “We strive to provide consumers with the best TV experience and ‘Virtual Joey’ means DISH is delivering even more choices in how and where consumers enjoy their Hopper.”

The software-based clients operate on users’ wireless or wired home networks and provide access to and control of the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR, including live TV, recordings and navigation of the electronic program guide.

DISH expects to release the PS3 and PS4 apps to DISH customers within the first half of 2014.

To use the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR capabilities on PS3 and PS4 systems, DISH subscribers will need to download an application from the PlayStation Store to their PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. Customers can operate the Virtual Joey on PS3 or PS4 using a DISH remote or DUALSHOCK controller.

AT&T is using CES to unveil the nifty Asus Padfone X, a 5-inch Android smartphone that powers a 9-inch tablet when docked.

The smartphone and tablet both run Android KitKat 4.4 and support HD voice, VoLTE and LTE-Advanced technology like carrier aggregation. Promising “seamless transition,” the Padfone smartphone operates independently and pops up on the tablet screen as soon as its slotted into the dock on the back of the tablet.

AT&T and Asus are also promising strong battery performance from the device. On Asus’ website, the company touts the latest model’s 63 hours of extended talk time.

Last year, Asus launched both the Padfone Infinity and Padfone mini in Taiwan. The announcement of the Padfone X coming to AT&T marks the U.S. debut for the device.

AT&T will be the exclusive carrier for the device. AT&T and Asus have already partnered on devices like the MeMO Pad 10-inch LTE tablet and the VivoTab. The carrier promised to soon announce pricing details and a release date for the Padfone X.

  • Transfers capability gives users the ability to watch transferred content even when no Internet connection is available
  • DISH Anywhere coming to Kindle Fire in 2014

Responding to growing consumer demand to watch favorite content on their mobile devices, DISH Network L.L.C., a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), has upgraded its DISH Anywhere™ app to integrate the Hopper TransfersTM feature to both iOS and Android phones and tablets. The new DISH Anywhere app gives Hopper® with Sling® users the ability to view recorded content where no Internet connection is available. This enhancement is a free update for DISH Anywhere users.

DISH Upgrades Hopper Software; Simplifies Navigation and Hopper-TV Integration

  • First Pay-TV provider to enable HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) technology
  • On Demand User interface update delivers faster, easier browsing
  • Second-screen app, DISH Explorer, now controls all TVs in Hopper ecosystem

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– DISH is rolling out the latest software for its Hopper® Whole-Home HD DVR, making DISH the first pay-TV provider to implement HDMI-CEC technology to control users’ televisions. The software update, code named “Denver,” is the fifth in a line of Hopper updates this year.

In addition to the upgraded Hopper and television integration, DISH has made updates to the box’s navigation and search interfaces. These enhancements, including On Demand shelf organization and control of Joey boxes with the DISH Explorer app, will improve user experiences on Hopper with Sling and Hopper set-top boxes.

HDMI-CEC Technology:
With a new HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) function, the moment a user turns on the Hopper, the television will automatically adjust to the proper viewing input. For example, customers who last watched a Blu-Ray no longer have to manually switch back to their TV’s satellite input to view their DISH channels.

“The ‘Denver’ release for Hopper is all about continuing to improve the TV viewing experience for our customers,” said Vivek Khemka

, senior vice president of product management at DISH. “With so many devices connected to the TV, we find confusion arises when consumers switch between inputs. Our Hopper’s HDMI-CEC feature helps eliminate that confusion.”

Additional Updates:
In addition to the HDMI-CEC, “Denver” improves the Hopper experience with the various enhancements detailed below.

On Demand Shelves
Hopper’s On Demand section now displays rows, or shelves, organized with movie and show tiles displayed horizontally across the screen. This makes it easier for users to scroll through their options and select from the more than 20,000 titles available in DISH’s On Demand collection. As part of this new design, DISH includes a “Free for Kids” shelf that features On Demand content filtered by content ratings appropriate for children.

DISH Explorer
To create a seamless browsing and content discovery experience, the DISH Explorer app can now control all televisions in a Hopper ecosystem. To further enhance the program discovery capability within DISH Explorer, the app now includes a new “See Also” recommendation feature. This allows users to easily find similar programming options. DISH Explorer is a highly-rated, second-screen iPad app that easily finds programming, engages on social media and serves as a remote control.

Search
Hopper’s search function now produces results from all possible sources, including the programming guide, recorded content and On Demand. Results. This is also presented in the shelf-based format, making it easy to view and select from the displayed options.

Programming guide
When users visit HBO, Starz, Encore, Epix and History in the programming guide, an option to select that channel’s On Demand page will appear with additional content options.

Help app
A new “Help” app provides customers with information to better maximize Hopper features and settings. The app is accessible from the “Menu” or by pressing the blue button on the DISH remote.

  • Addition of ‘Transfers’ functionality to DISH Anywhere speeds access of favorite content on mobile devices
  • Watch transferred content even when no Internet connection is available
  • Easily watch live TV and DVR recordings from Hopper with Sling on tablets, smartphones, and computers

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Responding to growing consumer demand to watch favorite content on mobile devices, DISH (NASDAQ: DISH) is readying an upgrade to its DISH Anywhere™ app that incorporates Transfers functionality to both iOS and Android phones and tablets. Using the new DISH Anywhere app, Hopper™ with Sling® users will soon be able to transfer their favorite shows for offline viewing to iPhones, iPads and Android phones and tablets. This enhancement will be pushed as an update to the free DISH Anywhere app by the end of the year.

Currently, DISH offers two different apps for remote viewing, DISH Anywhere and Hopper Transfers.
